Making biodegradable plastics a reality for a better future
Bioplastics – plastics that are bio-based, biodegradable, or both – have the same or similar properties as conventional plastics but offer additional benefits, such as reduced carbon footprint, better functionalities, or additional waste management options, such as organic recycling.
In particular, biodegradable plastic options such as PLA (polylactide) benefit from increasing interest as a result of final consumers demanding more sustainable and environmentally friendly materials.
Calcium sulfate makes it possible to increase scalability and lowers prices for biodegradable PLA and other bioplastic options. As a partial substitute for other resources, it optimizes the functional properties thus increasing the spectrum of attributes to be adapted according to the needs to be fulfilled by PLA in specific applications.
Main Benefits
- Suitable for food contact
- Good impact properties
- Reduces the percentage of required renewable feedstock for biodegradable plastic production
- Optimizes functional properties of conventional plastics as well as of biodegradable PLA and other bioplastics
